The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved the COVID-19 vaccine Janssen (also referred to as Johnson and Johnson, J&J or rAd26 vaccine) for use in the UK on May 28, 2021.(1) Supplies are expected to arrive in the UK later in the year, with 20 million doses on order.(2)
The approval of this vaccine adds a fourth option to the UK COVID-19 vaccination programme. The COVID-19 vaccine Janssen already has emergency use authorisation in over 50 countries and is currently being used in Ireland to accelerate protection in the 18-34 age group, with provision in 700 local pharmacies.(3)
